MeeAe (Mandy Caughey) is a Dancer and Choreographer whose work is heavily influenced by Butoh, a theatrical dance form which emerged out of Post - WWII Japan.  

 

MeeAe graduated from Bard College (2000) with a BA in Drama/Dance, the Don Parker Prize* and the Ana Itelman Prize**.  From there, she went on to take High-Flying Trapeze classes, and perform with the Caravan Stage Company aboard the tall ship Amara Zee.  After touring the Eastern US and Canada, MeeAe landed in New York City.

 

Upon her arrival in NYC, she was awarded a full scholarship to study at Peridance Capezio Center.  She then went on to train and perform extensively with Vangeline Theater, a Butoh-inspired dance company.  

Other dance and theater companies she has worked with include: Big Art GroupDesert SinMalinda Allen, Abigail LevineProto-type Theater, and Jenni Hong.  She has also had the honor of working with musicians and artists such as Insect Ark, Theo KoganMike GordonJamie Lidell,

Rob Roth, Timothy Saccenti, Lee Walton, and Yael Kanarek.

 

She has performed throughout the US, Europe, and at New York City venues such as P.S.122, Dance Theater Workshop, Abrons Arts Center, The Kitchen, Joyce SoHo, HERE Arts Center, Dixon Place, Chashama, New Museum, Theater for the New City, and Triskelion Arts.

 

 

 

In 2009, MeeAe relocated to Ithaca, NY, and brought her love of Butoh with her.

In addition to teaching weekly Butoh classes, and bringing in Guest Artists to lead workshops, she also performed in a variety of festivals, and locations such as the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Community School of Music and Arts, and Ithaca's first ever Fringe Festival.

 

She is the proud recipient of several awards from Community Arts Partnership

including:  Strategic Opportunity Stipend (2015, 2016, 2020), Artist in Community Grant (2015), and the Fellowship for Artists (2014).

 

Since her arrival in Ithaca, MeeAe has enjoyed collaborating with other artists such as Kurtis Brand (Painter & Musician), Ryan Curtis (Painter),

and Jari Poulin (Photographer).
